John Mc Neill is a Professor at Georgetown University, with primary affiliation at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and secondary affiliation at the Department of History. His research and teaching focus on environmental history, global history, and international history. He served as president of the American Society for Environmental History (2011–13) and the American Historical Association (2019).

His research examines the interplay between human societies and environmental changes, with a particular emphasis on the Anthropocene and global urban development. He has directed Ph.D. students in environmental history and held the Cinco Hermanos Chair in Environmental and International Affairs (2003–2006) before his current University Professor appointment.
