John Madden is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), part of the Faculty of Applied Science. He holds a BASc from UBC, MASc from McGill University, and PhD from MIT. His research focuses on innovative materials for energy systems, biomedical devices, and soft robotics, including artificial muscles, carbon nanotube actuators, and printable electronics. He leads the Molecular Mechatronics Lab, developing technologies like stretchable sensors, energy storage devices, and wearable electronics.
Education: BASc (UBC), MASc (McGill), PhD (MIT). Research emphasizes artificial muscle applications, photosynthetic photovoltaics, energy storage (batteries/supercapacitors), and smart materials. His lab has pioneered soft tactile sensors, stretchable batteries, and nylon actuators with high stress capabilities. Teaching includes courses on nanotechnology, semiconductor devices, and capstone design projects.
