John M. Lawler was an Associate Professor Emeritus of Linguistics and former Associate Professor in the Residential College at the University of Michigan (1942–2023). He held a B.A. from St. Benedict’s College (1964), M.A. from the University of Washington (1967), and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (1973). His research focused on metaphor in linguistics, computational tools for linguistic analysis, and Indonesian linguistics. He was recognized for his contributions to cognitive linguistics and undergraduate education, including a FAQ website honored by the LSA.
