John M. Braverman is an Associate Professor at Saint Joseph's University, affiliated with the Department of Biology and serving as Director of the Environmental Science and Sustainability Studies Program. He holds a PhD in Genetics from the University of California, Davis (1995), an MA in Biology from Loyola University Chicago (2003), and theological degrees from the Jesuit School of Theology (MDiv 2009, STL 2014).
- Education:
- AB in Biology, Princeton University (1989)
- PhD in Genetics, University of California, Davis (1995)
- MA in Biology, Loyola University Chicago (2003)
- MDiv, Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley (2009)
- STL, Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley (2014)
His research focuses on evolutionary genetics, molecular evolution, and bioinformatics, particularly examining DNA sequence-level evolutionary changes in Drosophila, plants, and microbial organisms. He actively collaborates with the Genomics Education Partnership (GEP) at Washington University to advance genome annotation and analysis.
Recent publications highlight contributions to plant transcriptomic analysis, mycobacteriophage genomics, undergraduate research pedagogy, and molecular clock studies. His work spans evolutionary rate analysis in Brassicaceae and Brazil nut trees, genomic structure in Drosophila, and genetic variation in Giardia.
Braverman integrates research into teaching, leveraging bioinformatics tools and collaborative projects like GEP to engage students in empirical and computational evolutionary studies. His career spans roles at Saint Joseph's University (2010-present) and Georgetown University (2003-2006).
