Dr. John M Crespi is a Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Agricultural & Rural Development (CARD) at Iowa State University. His expertise spans Agricultural Economics, Industrial Organization, and Applied Econometrics. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, and degrees from Colorado State University and California State University, Sacramento.
His research focuses on agricultural policy, market structures, and environmental regulations. Notable work includes analyses of carbon markets, livestock industry regulations, and food labeling decisions. Crespi serves as Editor of Agricultural Policy Review, Associate Editor of Journal of Agricultural & Food Industrial Organization, and editorial roles at several other journals.
He has received prestigious awards such as the Bruce Gardner Memorial Prize (2019) and the American Agricultural Economics Association Dissertation Award (2001). His recent studies address topics like the economic potential of anaerobic digesters in Iowa and the resilience of livestock sectors during crises like the 2020 pandemic.
CARD, under his leadership, conducts policy-relevant research on rural development and agricultural sustainability. Crespi’s work bridges academic inquiry and practical policy, influencing debates on trade competitiveness, climate change mitigation, and consumer decision-making in food markets.
