Dr. John Knowles is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences at Montana State University's College of Agriculture, with additional affiliation at the Institute on Ecosystems.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Geography from University of Colorado Boulder (2015)
- M.A. in Geography from University of Colorado Boulder (2009)
- B.A. in Hispanic Studies from Vassar College (2003)
Dr. Knowles' research spans ecohydrology and land-atmosphere interactions, investigating climate change impacts on water resources, carbon cycling, and ecosystem resilience in montane and alpine environments. His work frequently examines disturbance effects (e.g., bark beetle outbreaks) through integrated field measurements, remote sensing, and modeling approaches.
He currently leads the Montana State Ecohydrology Lab and holds the active ORE-CZ grant on soil respiration dynamics. His service includes the AGU Ecohydrology Technical Committee, AmeriFlux Science Steering Committee, and international grant review panels.
Dr. Knowles teaches Watershed Hydrology (ENSC 444) and mentors students in field-based environmental research, with recent publications focusing on snowmelt-carbon interactions, forest productivity gradients, and disturbance ecology across semiarid mountain ecosystems.
