John Kirk is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Co-Director of the Teaching Commons at Carthage College. He joined the faculty in 2016 and previously taught at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. His research focuses on innovative teaching methods in chemistry and developing nanoscale sensors, working closely with undergraduate students. He holds a B.A. from Coe College, a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Arizona (bioanalytical chemistry) and the University of Iowa (chemical education).
Education:
- B.A., Coe College
- Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Postdoctoral Research: University of Arizona & University of Iowa
Research interests emphasize applying novel teaching strategies and nanomaterials for sensor development. His students gain expertise in synthesizing nanoparticles and characterization techniques like spectroscopy and electron microscopy. He has presented work at conferences such as the National Conference of Undergraduate Research and PittCon.
Prof. Kirk co-authored the 9th Edition of the ACS's Chemistry in Context textbook and serves as an external evaluator for chemical education grants. His professional activities are complemented by a passion for promoting undergraduate research both inside and outside the classroom.
