John Iceland is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Demography at Pennsylvania State University's College of the Liberal Arts. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Sociology and Criminology and contributes to the Population Research Institute (PRI). His research focuses on demography, social inequality, immigration, and urban sociology, with notable works including Portrait of America (2014) and Race and Ethnicity in America (2017). Iceland has authored five books and served as Editor of Demography and Vice President of the Population Association of America.
His work examines racial residential segregation, poverty dynamics, and public opinion on social justice. Iceland's research integrates quantitative and qualitative data to address pressing societal issues, such as economic inequality and health disparities. He has received grants from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
Iceland’s articles span moral foundations theory, systemic racism, and policy implications of demographic trends. His recent work explores how moral intuitions shape attitudes toward social policies, including vaccine hesitancy and criminal justice reform.
