Dr. John Hunter is an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Health Sciences at Macquarie University, within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. His work focuses on community-based solutions to address marginalization in Aboriginal communities using Indigenous research methodologies aligned with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. He holds a PhD in Indigenous Traditional Knowledge from Macquarie University (2013).
Research interests include sustainable food systems, cultural restoration, and public health through Indigenous frameworks. Notable projects include the ongoing "Indigenous Cultural and Social Wellbeing: Key Lessons for Australian Communities and Policy-Makers" (2017–present).
Recent publications (2023–2025) explore Aboriginal food practices, native foods' role in sustainability, and co-design approaches with communities. He received the 2024 Best Presentation (Teaching Excellence) award, highlighting contributions to pedagogical innovation.
