John Hughes is a Reader in the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences. His research focuses on the composition and properties of construction geomaterials, particularly in historic buildings, with expertise in petrographic analysis and microscopy. He leads interdisciplinary work on climate change impacts on cultural heritage and has organized major international conferences. Current roles include Chair of the School Ethics Committee, Associate Lead for REF 2029, and Postgraduate Research Coordinator.
Key research interests include historic mortars, stone decay, and lime-based materials for conservation. He has led EU-funded projects, including a 2016 study on the Glasgow School of Art fire's impact on stone.
