Dr. John Houlihan is a Lecturer in the Department of Science Optics Research Group at South East Technological University (SETU). His research focuses on photonics, quantum computing, and semiconductor science, with a strong emphasis on optical metrology and quantum dot systems. He holds a PhD and BSc (Hons) in Physics from University College Cork (1998–2002 and 1994–1998, respectively), followed by postdoctoral research at UCC (2002–2006).
- Education:
- PhD in Physics, University College Cork (1998–2002)
- BSc (Hons 1st Class) in Physics, University College Cork (1994–1998)
His research interests include quantum information, optoelectronics, and semiconductor materials. He has led projects such as Optifuse (2010–2012) and Spatial Profiling of Quantum Dot Lasers (2008–2010), focusing on optical isolators and semiconductor laser dynamics. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to innovation and infrastructure.
Key areas of research output include quantum dot dynamics, semiconductor optical amplifiers, and Fourier transform spectrometers. He actively supervises PhD students and maintains a strong record of peer-reviewed publications (h-index 16, 889 citations).
Dr. Houlihan is affiliated with the Optics Research Group and collaborates on projects involving quantum dot lasers and optoelectronic devices.
