John H. Rickert is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He specializes in number theory, Diophantine equations, and partition functions, with additional interests in mathematics education and baseball statistics. Dr. Rickert holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and dual BS degrees in Mathematics and Astronomy-Physics from the University of Wisconsin. He has received notable awards, including the Samuel Greitzer Distinguished Coach Award (2016) for mentoring Indiana’s high school math teams.
He coordinates Rose-Hulman’s High School Mathematics Competition, organizes the Alfred R. Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition, and serves as chief judge for MATHCOUNTS competitions. His baseball-related work includes contributions to the design of Safeco Field’s roof and active participation in the Society for American Baseball Research. Rickert has also advised students at the Research Science Institute (RSI) at MIT.
His research spans topics like restricted partition functions, Pell-type equations, and combinatorial mathematics. He has taught courses such as MA111, MA371, MA190, and MA381. During sabbatical at Penn State (1997-98), he focused on partition functions and NSF-REU program initiatives.
