John Gibson

Professor John Gibson serves as Associate Dean International at the University of New England, leading research in the School of Environmental and Rural Science. His work spans genetic improvement, genomics, and agricultural systems across livestock, plants, and aquatic species.

• Education: BSc (Hons I) from University of Birmingham (1976), PhD in Genetics (1980), and Graduate of Australian Institute of Company Directors (2007).

Research focuses on genetic diversity, breeding program optimization, and systems integration for sustainable agriculture. He has pioneered SNP-based tools for breed characterization and genomic selection in crossbred dairy cattle, with applications in India and Africa.

Recent publications highlight genomic evaluation in smallholder systems, ancestral haplotype mapping, and low-density marker panels for cost-effective breeding programs. His work bridges quantitative genetics and functional genomics across species like cattle, sheep, and pigs.
