John Garvey is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accounting & Finance at the University of Limerick, a position held since September 2002. He is also founder and CEO of FarmHedge Ltd., a university spinout that won the Irish Times Innovation Award (Fintech) in 2019 for its digital platform coordinating grain trading and farm inputs across 30 Austrian cooperatives.
His educational background includes a BA and MA in Economics from NUI Galway, an MSc in Investment and Treasury from Dublin City University, and a PhD in Finance (2008) from Dublin City University under Professor Liam Gallagher.
Dr. Garvey's research bridges finance, sustainability, and risk management with core interests in Land Use and Sustainable Food Systems, Market Systems and Technology Adoption, and Insurance Markets and Alternative Risk Transfer. His work develops practical financial mechanisms for ecological restoration while examining volatility forecasting and risk transfer innovations.
Recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strategic shift toward integrating finance with environmental restoration, particularly through systematic reviews on land-based financial instruments and ecosystem service incentives, reflecting growing policy relevance in sustainable finance.

Dr. Garvey secured seed funding through partnerships with major European agribusinesses for FarmHedge, now deployed in Austria, Romania, Ukraine, and the UK. He collaborates with the University of Amsterdam and BurrenLife project on the Bramble Project, connecting farmers directly with consumers to reward environmental stewardship through food choices.
His work directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through sustainable agriculture innovations and land restoration finance mechanisms.
