John Gamon is a Professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Director of the Nebraska Earth Observatory (NEO). He is affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta, where he continues to conduct research on ecosystem function, particularly the 'breathing of the planet'—exchanges of carbon and water vapor between the biosphere and atmosphere. His work explores disturbance effects (e.g., fires, climate change) and employs optical monitoring methods like remote sensing and spectral reflectance to assess plant physiology, biodiversity, and ecosystem dynamics.
Notable research initiatives include:
- Seasonality of photosynthesis in temperate and boreal conifer forests (NSF Macrosystems)
- Terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate change via NASA ABoVE Program
- Linking optical diversity to biodiversity
- Adapting to climate change through self-funded vineyard studies in California
Dr. Gamon co-founded SpecNet (Spectral Network), a global collaboration utilizing optical sampling for ecological research. His projects are supported by NSF, NASA, USDA (McIntire-Stennis), and the European Space Agency.
