John Gallagher is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Zampell Faculty Fellow at Merrimack College. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), an M.S. from Boston University, and a B.S. from Union College. His research focuses on thermodynamic behavior of active and smart materials, experimental and computational characterization of materials, biomedical device design, and structural mechanics. Dr. Gallagher has been recognized with the Excellence in Civil Engineering Education Teaching Fellow award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (2015).
His work bridges fundamental materials science with practical applications, particularly in energy harvesting systems using ferroelectric crystals and adaptive structures. Collaborations with researchers like Christopher S. Lynch and Guinu Unnikrishnan highlight his interdisciplinary approach. Key research interests include phase transformations in ferroelectric materials, mechanical-thermal-energy conversion, and biomechanical studies of vertebral bone structures.
Recent articles emphasize advancements in ferroelectric energy harvesting, smart materials design, and biomechanical analysis. His contributions span both theoretical modeling and experimental validation, addressing challenges in material behavior under varying conditions such as electric fields, temperature, and mechanical stress.
