John Fowler Jr. is a Professor in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University, affiliated with the College of Agricultural Sciences. His research focuses on plant cell and developmental biology, particularly the molecular mechanisms governing cellular morphogenesis and development in plants, with a focus on cell polarity and exocytosis. He holds leadership roles, including Associate Head of his department and contributions to curriculum development.
- Education: Ph.D. in Genetics (UC Berkeley, 1994), B.S. in Genetics (University of Georgia, 1987).
- Research Interests: Plant cell polarity, exocytosis, pollen development, maize and Arabidopsis models, systems biology approaches, and genome-driven research.
His work integrates genetics, cell biology, and 'omics-scale methods. Recent projects include high-throughput phenotyping of maize kernels and investigating exocyst complex functions. He has advised numerous graduate and undergraduate students, contributing to over 50 publications. Awards include the Loyd Carter Award for Excellence in Teaching (2003) and NSF fellowships.
Service includes leadership in professional organizations, such as the Maize Genetics Conference, and public outreach on GMOs. His grants total over $6.7 million, with funding from NSF, USDA-NIFA, and EPA.
