Dr. John Foster is a Reader in Alcohol Policy and Mental Health Studies at the University of Greenwich, affiliated with the School of Health Sciences under the Faculty of Education, Health and Human Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of London (2001) and has been with the institution since 2009, initially as a Lecturer. His expertise spans mental health, substance use, and addiction policy, with extensive community engagement and academic leadership roles.
Prior to his current position, he served as Programme Leader for the MSc Mental Health Interventions at Middlesex University (2000–2009), a Research Fellow in Social Policy, and held nursing roles in mental health and addiction services. He currently advises the Greenwich Alcohol Strategy Delivery Group and collaborates with organizations like CGL Stockton on Tees to develop targeted health services.
Dr. Foster teaches research methods across pre-registration nursing to PhD levels and has chaired ethics committees. He has edited Drugs Education Prevention and Policy since 2003. His work emphasizes bridging academic research with community needs in alcohol and mental health policy.
