John Ferraris is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Dallas, affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. His career spans over four decades at UTD, including leadership roles such as Department Head (1995–2017) and Interim Dean (2003–2006).
- Education: B.A. (1969, St. Michael's College), M.A. (1971) and Ph.D. (1974) in Organic Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University, followed by a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at NBS (1975).
Ferraris specializes in electroactive polymers with applications in energy storage, light emission, and membrane separations. His research has shaped advancements in supercapacitors, fuel cells, and electrochromic devices.
Recent publications focus on carbon composites and metal-organic framework hybrids for energy storage systems, reflecting his long-standing expertise in Materials Science and Organic Chemistry. Awards include the Wilfred T. Doherty Award (2001) and multiple fellowships from the Navy/ASEE and National Research Council.
He has contributed to 22 patents in low-bandgap polymers, electrochemical capacitors, and electrospinning technologies. As a founding member of the NanoTech Institute, Ferraris continues to influence interdisciplinary research in advanced materials.
