Weill Cornell Medicineمعرفی
John Edwin Rubin is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medical College and an Assistant Attending Anesthesiologist at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. He serves as the Director of Simulation Education within the Department of Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell and is the Assistant Director of Education for Academic Assistance for the residency program. Dr. Rubin is also the Co-Director of the Extended Reality Anesthesiology Immersion Laboratory (XRAIL) and a founding member of the American Medical Extended Reality Association (AMXRA).
Dr. Rubin's educational background includes:
- M.D. from New York Medical College (2016)
- B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota (2010)
Dr. Rubin is an international leader in the application of extended reality (XR) and spatial computing in medical education and clinical practice. His research focuses on integrating XR technologies for training in procedural tasks within anesthesiology, traditional physical simulation education, and pre-procedural planning for clinical care. He is also an expert in using generative artificial intelligence to create conversational agents that enhance high-immersion simulation training, particularly for developing soft skills in difficult patient conversations. His clinical work emphasizes regional anesthesia, acute pain medicine, thoracic anesthesia, and obstetric anesthesia, with special proficiency in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks.
Dr. Rubin's scholarly publications demonstrate a clear progression toward practical implementation of XR technologies in medical settings. His work spans from foundational guides for spatial computing applications to real-world case series demonstrating clinical utility, with increasing focus on specific procedural applications including neuraxial techniques, thoracic procedures, and crisis management training. The research consistently bridges technological innovation with tangible clinical and educational outcomes.
Dr. Rubin has received numerous honors for his educational contributions:
- NYP Role Model of the Year - Department of Anesthesiology (2024)
- Marjorie Topkins NYP Teacher of the Year (2023)
- Timothy M. Connolly Colleague of the Year (2023)
- Ronald A. Leff Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Resident (2020)
- Chief Resident in Anesthesiology (2019-2020)
As an educator, Dr. Rubin actively mentors medical students, residents, and fellows while directing simulation-based training programs. He has secured significant research funding, including an AI-Powered End-of-Life Care Training grant from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (2024-2026). His educational leadership was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when he helped redesign residency training approaches to meet emergent challenges.
Dr. Rubin co-directs the Extended Reality Anesthesiology Immersion Laboratory (XRAIL), which serves as an innovative hub for developing and testing XR applications in anesthesia education and practice. The laboratory's work spans procedural training, crisis management simulations, and preoperative planning tools, with ongoing research into how these technologies can improve both medical education outcomes and patient care.
