He co-directs the International Design Center at MIT and serves on the Board of Directors for New Ecology, Inc. and the Fraunhofer Institute's Center for Sustainable Energy.
- Established the African Urban Metabolism Network for sustainable urban development in Africa
- Developed global typologies for urban resource consumption influencing international policy
- Pioneered a materials selector for sustainable building design with Granta Design and Mike Ashby
Research Interests span sustainable urban systems, industrial ecology, and building technology. His work integrates system dynamics modeling (e.g., Singapore water systems) and cross-sectoral analysis of urban energy, water, and waste systems. Current projects emphasize decarbonization pathways for African cities and multidisciplinary collaboration in urban policy development.
Scientific Recognition includes leadership roles in major academic and policy organizations, such as Chair of Sustainable Urban Systems for the International Society of Industrial Ecology and Associate Editor of Sustainable Cities and Society. He has organized seven international conferences and contributed to two books and numerous journal articles in Science, Journal of Industrial Ecology, and Energy Policy.
Advising & Grants highlight his directorship of the Urban Metabolism Group, which has engaged 50 UROP students, 5 graduate researchers, and a full-time research scientist. His leadership extends to MIT committees like the Innovation Initiative and Campus Sustainability Task Force, as well as industry partnerships driving sustainable architecture innovation.
