Research Interests: Professor Duffy focuses on Byzantine literature across theology, philosophy, medicine, and religious narratives. He emphasizes textual scholarship, advocating for its critical role in Medieval Greek studies. His work addresses under-researched areas such as Neoplatonic commentaries, Hippocratic medical texts, and the intersection of religious rhetoric with scholastic traditions. Collaborative projects include critical editions and translations of Michael Psellos and Sophronios of Jerusalem.
Publications Trends: His publications consistently prioritize interdisciplinary approaches to Byzantine texts, particularly through critical editions and translations. Recent work (2013–2020) highlights thematic engagement with religious iconography, hagiography, and medical historiography, reflecting a sustained commitment to recovering marginalized medieval voices and methodologies.
- Recipient of the Paideia Award (1999) from the Greek Archdiocese of America
- Collaborative grants include funding for projects on Psellos’ De Interpretatione commentary and Sophronios’ treatises on icon veneration
Labs/Teams: He leads editorial initiatives for major series like the Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library and collaborates with institutions such as Harvard University Press.
