John Duffy is a Professor of Economics at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where he leads the Experimental Social Science Laboratory (ESSL). He also holds affiliated faculty positions at Osaka University's Institute of Social and Economic Research and has been a Visiting Professor at institutions like King’s College London, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. His research focuses on micro-foundations of macroeconomic activity, experimental economics, and learning models, with emphasis on decision-making under uncertainty, asset pricing, and policy design.
Education: PhD in Economics from UCLA (1992), MA in Economics from UCLA (1988), and AB in Economics from UC Berkeley (1986, High Honors). Prior to UCI, Duffy held professorships at the University of Pittsburgh (1992–2014) and has extensive visiting roles globally.
Research interests span experimental macroeconomics, behavioral economics, and computational methods. Notable work includes studies on liquidity constraints, ETFs' impact on asset markets, and experimental validation of macroeconomic theories like the Lucas asset pricing model. His grants include NSF funding for lifecycle savings research and collaborative projects on financial stability and AI-human interactions.
Awarded the American Economic Review Excellence in Refereeing (2012). He has supervised 23 PhD students, many in prominent academic and policy roles. Duffy serves as Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Economics and Associate Editor of multiple journals, with a focus on advancing experimental methodologies and interdisciplinary research.
Labs/Teams: Director of UCI's ESSL and co-founder of the Pittsburgh Experimental Economics Laboratory (PEEL). Active in organizing global workshops like the Annual Experimental Macroeconomics Forum and SWEBE conferences.
