John Cushing is a Clarinet Tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), a position he has held since 1978. He has also served as Principal Clarinet of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from 1978 to 2014, and has performed extensively with major British orchestras. Cushing is a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from RCS (2014) and the Royal Philharmonic Society Salomon Prize (2015).
Education: Studied clarinet under Sidney Fell at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now Royal Northern College of Music), later with John McCaw in London. Awarded the Hiles Medal during his studies.
Research/Performance Focus: Specializes in chamber music, contemporary repertoire, and clarinet solo performance. Notable works include Sir James Macmillan’s clarinet concerto “Ninian” (dedicated to him) and premieres of pieces by John Adams, William Sweeney, and Ted Kirk. Maintains an active role in contemporary music through collaborations with ensembles and composers.
