John Charles is Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. He specializes in Colonial Spanish American literature with expertise in Andean cultural history and missionary writings.
His research examines indigenous literacy practices, church reforms, and cross-cultural exchanges in colonial Peru. Recent publications analyze Jesuit missionary strategies and indigenous interpretations of religious texts.
Charles has received prestigious fellowships from the Mellon Foundation and NEH, and his first book was shortlisted for the AAR Best First Book award. He directs graduate studies and contributes to university committees including the Latin American Library Faculty Committee.
