John Cattermull is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University's School of Engineering. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford in 2024 and holds a Master of Science from the same institution (2020). His research is supported by faculty sponsors Professors Hemamala Karunadasa and William Chueh, with active involvement in both the Karunadasa Lab and Chueh Lab.
Dr. Cattermull's research focuses on advanced battery materials, particularly potassium-ion and sodium-ion battery technologies. His work centers on Prussian blue analogues (PBAs), investigating their structural complexity, distortion mechanisms, and electrochemical properties. He examines how octahedral tilts, A-site slides, Jahn-Teller distortions, and framework hydration affect battery performance. His research combines experimental techniques like synchrotron X-ray diffraction with computational methods including Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory.
His publication record shows a clear trajectory in materials characterization for energy storage applications, with recent work expanding into lithium compounds for thermal energy storage and high-entropy sulfide argyrodite electrolytes.
