John Cassano is a CIRES Fellow, the Lead Scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), and a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. His research focuses on polar weather and climate through both fieldwork and modeling approaches.
Dr. Cassano earned his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Wyoming, an M.S. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, and a B.S. in Earth Science from Montana State University. His educational background has provided a strong foundation for his work at the intersection of atmospheric science and polar climate systems.
Dr. Cassano's research group studies how the polar atmosphere interacts with other components of the polar climate system—sea ice, ocean, ice sheets and land. The Cassano research group develops and uses weather and climate models to study how atmospheric processes shape polar climate. They conduct field campaigns to observe the polar atmosphere, using autonomous observing systems such as unmanned aircraft (drones), to make measurements under difficult environmental conditions. They also use model and satellite datasets for their research. Dr. Cassano has a passion for sharing science, stories and photographs from the polar regions with diverse audiences including K-12 students, college and university students, and the broader public.
Analysis of Dr. Cassano's recent publications reveals a strong focus on polar atmospheric processes, particularly the Arctic atmospheric boundary layer. His work often involves the MOSAiC expedition data and examines sea ice dynamics, atmospheric rivers, and climate modeling. A significant portion of his research investigates how atmospheric processes influence polar climate change, with particular attention to boundary layer stability, cyclone activity, and heat/moisture transport in polar regions.
Dr. Cassano has received several notable scientific awards:

Dr. Cassano has successfully secured funding from multiple agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy, and NASA for his research. His projects often involve interdisciplinary collaborations with scientists from institutions such as the Naval Postgraduate School, University of Washington, and national laboratories including Pacific Northwest National Lab and Los Alamos National Lab. He has mentored numerous students through his research group and teaching activities in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences.
Dr. Cassano's research group utilizes advanced observational platforms including unmanned aircraft systems (drones) for polar atmospheric measurements. He has been actively involved in major field campaigns such as MOSAiC (Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Change), a year-long international research expedition in the Arctic. His work often bridges observational data with modeling efforts to improve understanding of polar climate processes.
