John Carey Havard is a Professor of Early American Literature and Chair of the Department of English at Kennesaw State University. His academic focus spans hemispheric American studies and religious studies, with leadership experience since 2018 at multiple institutions.
Research Interests: His work interrogates transatlantic literary exchanges, US national identity formation, and intersections of race, religion, and colonialism in 19th-century American literature. Key themes include slavery, Hispanicism, immigration, and postcolonial discourse.
Publications: Havard’s scholarship explores the transnational dimensions of American literature, from Melville’s Benito Cereno to Cuban and Mexican influences on US narratives. Topics range from anti-Catholicism in antebellum fiction to cosmopolitanism in Ridge’s Joaquín Murieta.
Leadership: He spearheaded curricular innovations, KSU’s It's About Engagement QEP initiatives, and the establishment of the Department of English Lecturers Caucus. He served as Chair of the University Chairs and Directors Assembly (2023-24).
