John Brent Friesen is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Dominican University, where he has been a faculty member since 1999. He oversees his own research laboratory and has mentored dozens of undergraduate student researchers. His academic journey includes international experiences in Zaire (DRC) and Chad with the Mennonite Central Committee and Peace Corps, where he taught and developed interests in African traditional medicine.
Education:
- PhD in Organic Chemistry, University of Minnesota
- BA in Chemistry, Bethel College
Research Interests: Prof. Friesen investigates the biological activity of natural products and plant extracts, with emphasis on medicinal plants (e.g., Ginkgo, Black Cohosh, Hops) and dietary supplements. He pioneers countercurrent chromatography methodologies and designs research-rich undergraduate organic chemistry experiments. His collaborative work with UIC College of Pharmacy focuses on phytochemical analysis and validation of botanical therapeutics.
Publications: Recent articles (2021-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on analytical innovations in natural product research, including NMR-based impurity detection, countercurrent chromatography advancements, and bioactivity studies of cannabinoids against SARS-CoV-2. Recurring themes include metabolomics, quality control of botanicals, and green extraction techniques.
Mentoring & Facilities: He actively advises undergraduate researchers in state-of-the-art laboratories at Parmer Hall (operational since 2007), emphasizing hands-on training in organic and analytical chemistry techniques.
