John I. Brauman was the J.G. Jackson and C.J. Wood Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University, serving as Department Chair twice (1979-1983; 1995-1996) and holding roles such as Associate Dean of Research. His research focused on chemical reaction dynamics, gas-phase ions, and spectroscopy, reshaping understanding of molecular reactivity.
- Education: SB, MIT (Chemistry, 1959); PhD, UC Berkeley (Chemistry, 1963)
- Postdoctoral Work: NSF Fellow at UCLA (1963)
His work explored ionic reactions, solvent effects on reactivity, and organometallic chemistry. He authored over 300 publications and received prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Science. Beyond academia, he served as Deputy Editor of Science and Home Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences. Brauman was known for mentorship, humor, and a dedication to science communication.
Awards: National Medal of Science, NAS Award in Chemical Sciences, Linus Pauling Medal, and ACS Parsons Award (2017).
Legacy: Advised numerous students, including Stephen Craig, and championed interdisciplinary science. His legacy includes advancing reaction dynamics and fostering scientific discourse through editorial and leadership roles.
