John Barrington is a Professor of History at Furman University, where he has taught since 1996. He previously taught at Skidmore College (1993–1996) and holds a Ph.D. from The College of William and Mary and a B.A. from Oxford University. His research explores anti-Catholicism and national identity in colonial British America, with a current focus on the ethics of war during the American Revolution. He served as Chair of the History Department at Furman from 2009 to 2015.

Research interests include colonial religious dynamics, transatlantic perspectives on U.S. history, and ethical dimensions of military conflict. His 2019 book Baptists in Early North America: Welsh Neck, South Carolina examines one of the earliest biracial congregations in the state. Awards include the Furman Award for Meritorious Teaching (2020) and a Mellon Foundation grant (2005).
Grants and fellowships include the 2005 Mellon Foundation grant and his 1992 Commonwealth Fellowship. He has contributed to both academic publications and popular history guides like The Complete Idiot's Guide to the American Revolution.
