John Asbury is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Eberly College of Science and the Integrated Energy Systems research theme. His research focuses on understanding chemical and structural changes in solid-state electro-active materials such as organic photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and quantum-dot solar cells. He has made significant contributions to studying defects in semiconductor materials, quantum dot surface chemistry, and photovoltaic efficiency enhancement. Notably, he received the 2022 Distinguished Service Award from Penn State.
His work spans interdisciplinary areas including materials science, nanotechnology, and energy materials. Recent studies include investigations into MoS₂ defect formation, ligand dynamics in quantum dots, and polymer-based solar cell optimization. His research often combines experimental methods with computational modeling to elucidate fundamental mechanisms in optoelectronic materials.
Prof. Asbury collaborates widely, contributing to high-impact journals in chemistry and materials science. His lab’s efforts aim to bridge fundamental material understanding with practical applications in renewable energy technologies.
