John Almon Dudman (1920–2008) was a prominent figure at Reed College, serving as a professor of mathematics and dean of students from 1963 to 1983. He earned his mathematics degree from Reed in 1942 and later returned to teach probability and statistics after WWII service and post-war work in research and academia at institutions like Dartmouth. His tenure as dean was marked by advocating for student autonomy during the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s, notably supporting Reed’s famously dropout-turned-legend Steve Jobs. Dudman’s academic work spanned mathematical applications in diverse fields, including collaborations with the Oregon State Fish Commission and the University of Oregon Medical School.
