معرفی
John A Toth is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He holds positions within the Faculty of Science and has been affiliated with the university since 1995, progressing from Assistant to Associate and then Full Professor. His research affiliations include the Centre de Recherche Mathématiques (CRM) and the Fields Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
John A Toth earned his BSc (Honours) and MSc (Honours) from McMaster University in 1988 and 1989, respectively, and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993. He completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University (1993–1995) before joining McGill.
His research focuses on semiclassical microlocal analysis, with applications to spectral asymptotics and quantum chaos. Specific interests include eigenfunction behavior, quantum integrable systems, nodal sets, and geometric control. He has organized workshops such as the Special Year in Analysis (CRM and Fields Institute, 2003–04) and contributed to conferences on spectral geometry and microlocal theory.
He has received notable awards, including the
- Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship (2000–2004)
- André Aisenstadt Prize in Mathematics (1998)
- William Dawson Scholar distinction (2001–)
- Milton Prize in Science (1994).
John has advised multiple PhD and MSc students, including Mahta Khosravi (2005), Alain Bourget (2001), and Gordon Craig (1999). He also co-supervises current MSc candidates like Dominique Rabet and Joel Barnes. His grant leadership includes NSERC and Quebecois funding for spectral asymptotics research.
He collaborates extensively, hosting postdoctoral fellows (e.g., Yiannis Petridis, Steve Zelditch) and visiting researchers (e.g., Nikolai Nadirashvili, Victor Ivrii). His committee roles include Chair of the Leo Yaffe and Principal’s Prize Nominations Committee (2006–2008) and Dean’s Advisory Committee on Chair Selection (2005).
