Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biologyمعرفی
Johannes Zimmermann serves as Junior Research Group Leader for 'Mechanisms of Microbial Metabolic Interactions' at the Cluster of Excellence 'Balance of the Microverse', Friedrich Schiller University Jena since June 2024.
His academic foundation includes:
- Systems science and bioinformatics studies at University of Osnabrück and Jena
- PhD in medical systems biology from University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein
- Postdoctoral training at Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, Plön
Zimmermann pioneers computational approaches to microbial ecology, developing methods for metabolic network reconstruction and community simulation. His research centers on microbial life history strategies, metabolic diversity modeling, and identifying functional drivers of microbiome assembly. Notable contributions include the first functional characterization of Caenorhabditis elegans native microbiome, advancing understanding of host-microbe metabolic interactions under environmental change.
As a new group leader, Zimmermann focuses on building collaborative research capacity within the Microverse Cluster's interdisciplinary framework. His lab investigates how metabolic interactions determine microbiome behavior across changing conditions, with applications for ecological balance and microbial management strategies.
