Dr. Johannes Kroon serves as Senior Experimental Officer in the Department of Biosciences at Durham University. He has held this role since 2014, concurrently managing the Molecular Cell Biology laboratory under Prof. Patrick Hussey. Previously, he worked in industry (2012–2014) at Invista Intermediates and as a Senior Research Associate (1993–2012) in Prof. Antoni Slabas' Lipid Molecular Biology group at Durham. He holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from Durham University (2000), with earlier training at the University of Amsterdam (BSc) and Free University Amsterdam (MSc in Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology).
His research focuses on applied biological systems, including lipid synthesis regulation, actin-associated proteins, synthetic biology, and genome editing in plants/microbes. He contributes to the Durham Centre for Crop Improvement Technology and Molecular Plant Sciences research groups. His work spans plant immunity, cytoskeletal dynamics, and metabolic engineering, with recent studies on stomatal immunity, ER-mitochondrial interactions, and pollen tube growth mechanisms.
Kroon's publications emphasize plant signaling pathways, lipid metabolism, and proteomic approaches. His experimental expertise bridges academic and industrial contexts, addressing challenges in sustainable polymer production and plant-based biotechnology.
