Johannes Kind is a Researcher at the Institute for Technical Thermodynamics (TTD), Technical University of Darmstadt, since 2020. His work focuses on advanced numerical modeling of phase change phenomena for space and terrestrial thermal management systems.
His educational background includes:
- M.Sc. in Production Engineering (Specialisation: Chemical and Process Engineering), Universität Bremen (2018-2019)
- B.Sc. in Production Engineering (Specialisation: Mechanical Engineering), Universität Bremen (2014-2018)
He completed a research stay at NASA Glenn Research Center in 2019 during his Master's thesis on Zero-Boil-Off-Tank simulations for ISS experiments.
Kind's primary research centers on nucleate boiling mechanisms, where he develops high-fidelity 3D-CFD models in OpenFOAM to simulate bubble dynamics under microgravity and electric field influences. His work bridges experimental data from space-based platforms with numerical analysis to replace empirical correlations with physics-based models of heat and mass transfer.
He is a key contributor to the ESA-led RUBI (Reference Multiscale Boiling Investigation) project on the International Space Station, which provides critical validation data for boiling simulations in weightlessness. Future work focuses on extending solver capabilities to model electrohydrodynamic effects for thermal control in spacecraft.
