Johanna E. Foster is Professor and Helen Bennett McMurray Endowed Chair in Social Ethics within Monmouth University's Department of Political Science and Sociology, where she directs the Sociology Program. Her career uniquely bridges academic scholarship with transformative community engagement in prison education reform.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Sociology, Rutgers University (2000)
- M.A. in Applied Sociology/Social Policy, The American University (1994)
- B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies/Women’s Studies, The American University (1992)
Research Focus: Professor Foster's work centers on intersectional feminist theories of inequality, critically examining how race, class, and gender converge in social movements and carceral systems. Her groundbreaking research on women in mass incarceration reveals systemic barriers in prison education access, while her recent collaborative work on media ethics exposes problematic reporting of Yazidi women survivors of ISIS sexual violence, earning UN recognition. She uniquely connects feminist theory with on-the-ground prison education initiatives.
Scholarly Impact: Foster's publications span two decades, evolving from foundational work on feminist identity formation (1999-2010) to contemporary analyses of disaster capitalism in higher education (2022) and ethical reporting on conflict-related sexual violence (2018-2020). Her scholarship consistently prioritizes marginalized voices, particularly incarcerated women and genocide survivors, while advancing intersectional frameworks across sociology, gender studies, and media ethics.
Recognition:
- Helen Bennett McMurray Endowed Chair in Social Ethics
Community Leadership: For 20 years, Foster has pioneered prison education access through co-founding The College Bound Consortium (now NJ-STEP/RISE) and College Connections (now Hudson Link). She currently co-coordinates Monmouth's Academic Exchange Program, creating integrated classrooms where campus and incarcerated students learn together—a model demonstrating sociology's real-world transformative potential. Her work has secured institutional partnerships across New Jersey and New York correctional systems.
Program Development: Foster's initiatives have established sustainable higher education pathways in carceral settings, directly influencing state-level corrections education policy. The Academic Exchange Program exemplifies her commitment to dismantling educational barriers through collaborative learning environments that challenge traditional campus-prison divides.
