Johan van Griensven

Johan van Griensven is a Professor and Unit Head of the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp, Belgium. He holds a Medical Doctorate from KU Leuven (1997), a PhD in Medical Sciences (2003) focusing on gene therapy of AIDS, and a Master's in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2010). His research focuses on neglected tropical diseases, particularly visceral leishmaniasis and HIV co-infection, with extensive fieldwork in Ethiopia and West Africa. He has led major projects during the 2013-2016 Ebola outbreak, including a phase II/III clinical trial on convalescent plasma therapy in Guinea. He is Course Director of the SCREM course on clinical research and evidence-based medicine. Dr. van Griensven has published in high-impact journals like NEJM and Lancet, and received the Dubois-Briguez Prize for tropical medicine research in 2017.
