Johan Stennek is a Professor of Economics at the University of Gothenburg, affiliated with the Department of Economics. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics (1995) and a Bachelor of Political Science (1988) from Stockholm University. His research focuses on applied microeconomics, including labor unions, international trade in bilateral oligopoly, and mixed oligopoly. He teaches microeconomics, industrial economics, and game theory at the master’s and doctoral levels, coordinating the Master of Science in Economics program.
Previously, he held positions at the Institute for International Economic Studies (Stockholm University), Tilburg University (Netherlands), and the Research Institute of Industrial Economics (IUI/IFN). He was awarded the International Inter-University Franqui Chair in Belgium (2002) and served as an associate editor of the International Journal of Industrial Organization and a member of the CEPR research network.
- Research Projects: Coordinated 'Competition Policy in International Markets' (EU-funded), 'Mixed Markets' (2015–2018), and 'Causes of Growth' (2008–2014).
- Expert Roles: Economic expert judge at the Patents and Market Court, member of the Swedish Medical Benefits Board, and advisor to the European Commission and major European companies on competition policy.
His publications span prestigious journals such as the Journal of the European Economic Association and Journal of Public Economics, addressing topics like merger analysis, union dynamics, and regulatory frameworks.
