Johan Schot is Professor of Global History and Sustainability Transitions at Utrecht University Centre for Global Challenges, a pioneer in sustainability transitions research, and founder of the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium and Deep Transitions Lab. His work focuses on reorienting science, technology, and innovation policy toward systemic change through experimentation, directionality, and socio-technical regime transformation.
- Academic Leadership: Established transformative innovation policy as a third paradigm in STI policy
- Global Impact: Collaborates with Colombia, Finland, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, and China
- Key Projects: Develops frameworks for transformative investment in sustainability
His research spans sustainability transitions, deep transitions theory, and policy experimentation, with recent 2025 publications analyzing low-carbon acceleration mechanisms and systemic investing. He examines how exogenous shocks (e.g., World War II, oil crises) influence socio-technical systems, and how universities like Eindhoven University of Technology can adopt transformative research cultures. Schot’s work bridges historical analysis with future-oriented policy design, emphasizing equity, justice, and long-term system change. He has particularly concentrated on scaling transformative finance in developing countries, including South Africa’s green hydrogen initiatives.
