Prof. Johan P.M. Hoefnagels is an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), leading the Hoefnagels Group and the Multi-Scale Lab. His research focuses on micromechanics, particularly microscale damage mechanisms, interface delamination, and stretchable electronics. He holds a PhD from TU/e (2005) and a Rubicon fellowship for research at Harvard University (2006–2007). He has supervised over 27 PhD students and 18 postdoctoral researchers, contributing to 311+ publications and securing ~10 million EUR in grants.
Education: MSc and PhD in Applied Physics from TU/e. Key international experiences include a Rubicon fellowship at Harvard, and collaborations with institutions like NIST, CSM, and KAUST. Current roles include Editor-in-Chief of Strain and Dutch representative for ESIS.
Research interests include ductile damage, fracture mechanics, MEMS, and hybrid materials. Awards include NWO Vidi (2013), Veni (2008), and Rubicon (2006) grants, plus top reviewer recognition (2011). He has organized over 20 international conferences and contributed to 8 graduate courses in mechanical engineering.
Teaching involves designing courses on experimental and computational micromechanics, advising ~70 MSc theses, and mentoring over 150 students. His Multi-Scale Lab houses advanced equipment for mechanical testing and microscopy, supporting interdisciplinary research across TU/e departments.
