Johan Fischer is an active Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Business at Roskilde University, Denmark. His research focuses on the interfaces between human values and markets, with particular expertise in religious food practices including halal consumption, Islamic markets, and vegetarianism across Southeast Asia and India.
His research interests span Islamic consumption patterns, moral economies of food, religious marketplaces, and the globalization of religious dietary practices. Fischer examines how religious values interact with market forces, particularly in Muslim and Hindu contexts, analyzing how consumers navigate religious requirements within globalized food systems. His work bridges anthropology, sociology, religious studies, and economics to understand contemporary consumption patterns.
Fischer's extensive publication record shows consistent focus on religious food markets, with recent work shifting toward vegetarianism and plant-based futures. His publications reveal a trajectory from studying halal markets in Southeast Asia to examining vegetarianism in India and developing theoretical frameworks for understanding moral economies of consumption globally.
