Johan Emilian Moan is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Oslo's Department of Physics within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. He also serves as Head of the Biophysics and Photodynamic Therapy Group at the Institute of Cancer Research, Oslo University Hospital. His academic career includes a PhD from the University of Oslo (1975) and roles as Senior Scientist at Oslo University Hospital since 1980 and Adjunct Professor since 1991.
Research focuses on photobiophysics, photomedicine, and the health impacts of solar radiation. Key areas include skin cancer epidemiology, vitamin D's anticarcinogenic effects, ozone depletion consequences, and photodynamic therapy advancements. He pioneered studies on seasonal cancer progression linked to vitamin D and developed novel suncream models.
Notable publications (2012-2019) explore UV radiation effects, vitamin D synthesis mechanisms, and geographical cancer trends. Awards include the UiO Research Prize (2010) and Birkeland Prize (2003). His work bridges physics, dermatology, and public health, addressing global health challenges like skin cancer prevention and phototherapy optimization.
