Johan Bergenholtz is a Professor of Surface and Colloid Science at the Department of Chemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Gothenburg, with additional appointments as Guest Professor at Lund University and Adjunct Scientist at AstraZeneca R&D. His research spans soft matter physics, nanoparticle systems, and polymer science, focusing on fundamental colloidal phenomena and their applications.
His educational background includes a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware (1996), followed by postdoctoral work at BASF, Universität Konstanz, and Caltech. He joined Gothenburg as Assistant Professor in 1999, becoming Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor in 2012.
Bergenholtz's research investigates thermoreversible hydrogels, SALR interactions, polymer-grafted colloids, and scattering techniques. His work bridges fundamental soft matter physics with practical applications in drug delivery and biomaterials. Recent publications demonstrate expertise in nanoparticle synthesis, protein aggregation, and advanced characterization methods.
His scientific achievements include the Allan P. Colburn Prize and the Akzo-Nobel Nordic Surface Chemistry Prize, recognizing his contributions to colloid and interface science. His research has been supported through collaborations with industrial partners and academic institutions.
As an educator, he teaches core courses in basic chemistry, statistical thermodynamics, and surface science, while also contributing to international summer schools on scattering methods. His work with AstraZeneca demonstrates strong industry-academia collaboration in pharmaceutical research.
