Joey Neilsen is a Research Fellow at the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. Previously held postdoctoral positions at Boston University Astronomy Department and MIT. Specializes in X-ray, radio, and infrared observations of black holes and neutron stars in the Milky Way, particularly focusing on accretion disk dynamics and X-ray spectral variability. PhD from Harvard University (2011) under Prof. Julia Lee, with thesis work on GRS 1915+105's relativistic jets and ionized winds.
Key research areas include black hole accretion physics, jet-wind interactions, and stochastic variability mechanisms. Utilizes Chandra/HETGS and other X-ray observatories for high-resolution spectral analysis. Active in Event Horizon Telescope collaborations for supermassive black hole imaging. Over 30 refereed publications and conference proceedings, focusing on black hole binaries, Sagittarius A*, and accretion disk instabilities.
