Joerg Tuske is a Professor of Philosophy at Salisbury University since 2003, specializing in classical Indian philosophy, philosophy of mind, and Buddhist thought. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2002) and has taught at institutions including the University of Nottingham and King’s College London. His research bridges Western and Indian philosophical traditions, focusing on topics like emotion theory, epistemology, and the philosophy of language. He coordinates Salisbury’s South Asian Studies Minor and developed a study abroad program with the University of Pune.
Education: PhD (History and Philosophy of Science, Cambridge, 2002); MPhil (Cambridge, 2000); MA (King’s College London, 1994); BA (University College London, 1993).
Research interests include Indian logic, Buddhist philosophy of mind, and cross-cultural philosophical dialogue. He emphasizes teaching innovative courses such as 'Minds, Brains, and Computers' and 'Philosophy and Culture,' integrating interdisciplinary approaches.
Notable awards include the Associated Press Award for co-hosting the radio program 'Philosophy in Music' (2014) and participation in NEH summer programs on Buddhist philosophy. His publications include the edited volume Indian Epistemology and Metaphysics (2017) and articles in Asian Philosophy and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
Service roles include Department Chair of Philosophy, leadership in Salisbury’s Fulton Public Humanities Committee, and contributions to international education initiatives. He is fluent in German, French, and Sanskrit.
