Joel Yang is a Professor and Associate Head of Pillar (EPD) at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), with a joint appointment as Principal Scientist I at A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). He leads research in nanophotonics, nanoplasmonics, and 3D nanoprinting, with pioneering work in plasmonic color printing achieving record 100,000 dpi resolution. His lab focuses on sub-10-nm nanofabrication, optical security, and metamaterials.
Educated at MIT (PhD 2009, MSc 2005) and NTU (BEng 2003), he holds key roles as Associate Editor of Science Advances and Optics Express. Awards include OSA Fellow (2020), NRF Investigatorship (2020), TR35@Singapore (2012), and the Singapore Young Scientist Award (2012).
Research interests span structural color printing, nanofabrication techniques, and optical security applications. His work bridges material science, nanotechnology, and photonics, with over 200 publications in high-impact journals like Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, and ACS Nano.
Key achievements include developing the 'salty-developer' method for high-resolution e-beam lithography and 3D-printed photonic crystals with complete visible bandgaps. He advises numerous PhD students, advancing innovations in nanoscale optics and security printing technologies.
