Joel Scheingross is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering at the University of Nevada Reno. He leads the Scheingross Surface Processes Lab, which explores Earth surface dynamics and climate interactions through field studies, experiments, and modeling. His work bridges geomorphology, sedimentology, and carbon cycling across human and geologic timescales.
Education:
- Ph.D., Geology, California Institute of Technology (2016)
- M.S., Geology, California Institute of Technology (2012)
- B.A. & B.S., Geology & Environmental Science, University of California Berkeley (2007)
Research Interests:
His research employs fieldwork, flume experiments, geochemical analyses, and remote sensing to investigate processes shaping landscapes. Key themes include:
- Waterfall dynamics and bedrock erosion mechanisms
- Organic carbon transport and preservation in fluvial systems
- Climate-landscape feedbacks through sediment and carbon cycling
- Lithospheric flexure impacts on Andean geomorphology
Recent studies highlight autogenic channel features, sediment-organic carbon interactions, and the role of physical experiments in understanding complex Earth surface processes.
Advising & Lab:
He directs student research opportunities in his lab, focusing on integrative approaches to Earth surface science. Collaborative projects often address applied questions in environmental geology and planetary science.
