Joel Rosen is a Lecturer in the School of Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), within the College of Art and Design. He holds a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Computer Graphics Design from RIT, a precursor to today’s Visual Communication Design (VCD) program. With a 40-year career spanning freelance design, art direction, and creative leadership at Fortune 500 companies, Rosen specializes in integrating emerging technologies with traditional design practices.
His teaching philosophy emphasizes foundational skills and practical applications tailored to students’ goals. Currently, he teaches courses such as NMDE-111 (Digital Survey I), NMDE-303 (Interactive III), NMDE-401 (Capstone I), and graduate-level courses like VCDE-718 (Project Design) and VCDE-742 (Information Design). His expertise includes user experience design, information architecture, and digital media workflows.
Rosen’s professional experience bridges industry and academia, offering students insights into design’s role in technology-driven fields. He advises on career preparation, portfolio development, and the business aspects of new media design. His work has contributed to RIT’s focus on innovative design education and interdisciplinary collaboration.
